The idea for the Able Table began with Esther, a Special Needs Assistant and Art Therapist, who wanted a table that would allow everyone in her classroom to sit together. Many of her students used large motorised wheelchairs, making it difficult for them to sit around a conventional table during mealtimes and activities.
After searching for a suitable wheelchair-accessible group table and finding nothing that met their needs, Esther asked her partner, Martin Finucane, to make one. After months of designing and developing the table, the first Able Table was created — turning a simple need for inclusion into a practical solution for shared spaces.
